Set out!
You were born for the road.
Set out!
You have a meeting to keep.
Where? With whom?
Perhaps with yourself

Anonymous pilgrim

The Via Francigena nel Sud is the pilgrim route onwards south towards the Adriatic. I walked from Rome to Bari where I met one of my sons, Andrew. We took a ferry to Durres in Albania.

We followed the Via Egnathia across Albania, where Andrew took the bus to Istanbul. I walked onwards through Macedonia and Greece to Thessaloniki. Here I met three friends and together we made a pilgrimage to Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain, and stayed in the monasteries over Orthodox Easter.

After recovering from a back problem I cycled from Alexandroupolis to Gallipoli in this centenary of the campaign. See my Gallipoli commemoration page for more about this. Finally I cycled onto Istanbul.
