Chapter 10: Reflections on a possible pilgrimage

The road to Rome has often been the road to a synthesis of faith and intellect which appeared impossible anyway else.

Jaroslav Pelikan

I have loved Rome since my first visit as a student. It is one of the world’s great cities and even today the drama of the papacy with the City as a splendid backdrop can dominate the world’s attention. My stay gave me a chance to meet up with my family, to visit St Peter's Basilica, the Venerable English College and other important sites. There was also time to reflect on my journey and on the role of pilgrimage in the modern world.
