Chapter 1: Canterbury to Amettes, 142km
Monday 24 March to Sunday 30 March

I find myself a beachcomber along the edges of the sea of faith. I am to
speak of unbelief, to try to pick from the flotsam and jetsam of my own
experience some reflections on doubts about the existence of God and the
worth of religion.

Eamon Duffy

My first week on the road took me from Canterbury Cathedral to Amettes, birthplace of the patron saint of pilgrimage. I had to face doubt, anger and some dreadful weather, but by the end of the week I was getting into my stride.
